I write this sitting in the kitchen sink; what is a classic?

My new discovery of  I Capture The Castle by Dodie Smith  led me to wonder what other classics I had missed and additionally what is a classic?  In my mind it is a book that was around when I was child that my mum or penguin told me I should read, or perhaps was part of the A level English Lit syllabus.  Richard Davies ( 50 classic books ) defines as  “ If people are still reading the book 50 years after it was published then it's probably on its way to being a classic.”   I have to agree with him though, the pressure of reading books because you should disappears after the end of our formal study of English Literature.  I hated Austen's "Emma" although I was brave enough to read "Pride and Prejudice and actually enjoyed it but this forced reading of Austen put me off classics for a long time.   It has to be something more than just note-worthy, it has to be enjoyable and still resonate however many years after pub...

Under the Dome by Stephen King

Image
Why? This is terrible but I cannot remember why I picked this book. I think I was lead to it by Book Riot's 2019 Read Harder Challenge but now I look, I have no idea which task it would fit under.   Although I loved Horror and Stephen King as a teenager, I haven't read one of his books in over 20 years so whatever the why was, I'm grateful. Otherwise known as amazon spiel: Adapted as a major TV series, produced by Steven Spielberg, King's bestselling novel centres on a small town suddenly and inexplicably sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible dome. In UNDER THE DOME, King has produced another riveting masterpiece. The end of every chapter hooks you into the next, drawing you inside a psychological drama that is so rich, you don't read it, you live it. It is the story of the small town of Chester's Mill, Maine which is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of th...

An Interview with Caroline Bond; author of The Forgotten Sister and The Second Child

Image
Caroline Bond was born in Scarborough and studied English at Oxford University before working as a market researcher for 25 years. She has an MA in Creative Writing from Leeds Trinity University, and lives in Leeds with her husband and three children.   Her debut novel was The Second Child which featured on the Simon Mayo Radio 2 book club in April 2018 and gets a score of 4 on goodreads and 4.5 on Amazon.   The Forgotten Sister was released in June 2019 when I had the pleasure of meeting Caroline during a time when I was very curious about the process of writing and publishing.   Caroline was kind enough to agree to an interview (my first author interview - eeeeeek a little bit excited).  You can find my review here  Caroline Bond The Forgotten Sister 1.    Did publishing your first book change your process of writing? Yes. It gave me the tools to structure my stories better and a whole new approach to editing my own work e.g. much more...
