The Second Chance Supper Club By Nicole Meier

Why?

I haven't done a Netgalley review in a while so thought it was time.  I wanted something that would not be taxing and this seemed to meet the requirements.

What?

Otherwise known as amazon spiel:

Two estranged sisters reunite in an emotional novel of family, forgiveness, lost hope, and new beginnings.
They had a forever bond, until a sudden tragedy thrust them apart. Now, each at a crossroad in her own life, two sisters’ paths are about to intersect.
Broadcast journalist Julia Frank has it all: a career, an ambitious fiancé, and the hard-won respect of her peers. Until a ruinous decision destroys her reputation, puts her job at risk, and sends her reeling toward the only soul left to turn to: her estranged sister, Ginny.
The owner of a clandestine supper club hidden in the Arizona desert, Ginny Frank has a lot on her plate. The last thing she wants is more drama—or the burden of nursing her younger sister’s wounded ego. But family is family. Besides, Ginny can use the help in more ways than one, and she’s going to make sure Julia pulls her weight.
As a tenuous reunion reopens old wounds, Julia and Ginny have no choice but to confront the pain and betrayals of the past. Will working to keep the secret supper club running be just what they need to find common ground and a path toward forgiveness, or will the increasing stress push them even further apart?

Rusty words  ☕ ☕ ☕

So Ginny and Julia are sisters. They lost their parents and their close sibling relationship disappeared due to differing coping methods. But Julia returns to her sister and home state when her life starts to unhinge.

This is not a complicated book. Neither does it have a twist that takes you by surprise. But it is a nice book. It is easy to read. It is a journey that we all go through at some time in our lives as we suddenly realise that we are not where we need to be. Julia is perceived as cowardly for running away but actually she is brave. She follows her instinct and understands what is required at that period of her life despite the disapproval and disbelief of those closest to her.

Both sisters are in a similar predicament but Ginny has the added pressure of Olive. She loves her daughter but the burden of helping to keep the supper club going is forcing Olive to view the prospect of life with her father through rose tinted glasses.

This is a good read, simple but enough to stir thoughts; what will I do when my parents die? Will I be the one to feel committed to deal with everything and resent my sibling despite probably not wanted them to have control? Probably but I hope that those around me don't let it happen. I hope that I don't let that happen.

One thing that made me really happy about this book was that not only did it feature a type 1 diabetic, but the story-line was medically accurate! Well done Nicole Meier - you deserve an award for that.

Good book, you'll find yourself zipping through it really quickly, would be great for a holiday feelgood read.
